[note this is NOT the Prometheus edition, the NuVision edition nor the Digiread edition and is not full of typos!. It was first published in Sept. 2012 so any earlier review is not of this edition, which is an accurate and well presented edition of the translation by W.D.Ross, generally recognised as an excellent English translation]

Translated by Sir David Ross, one time White's Professor of Moral Philosophy and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.

This volume contains that part of the philosophy of Aristotle which is concerned with "first philosophy", the search for true wisdom, at the core of which Aristotle places the study of being (now known as ontology). It consist of 14 books (corresponding to scrolls in the original) in one paperback.

The excellent translation by W.D. Ross has been re-typeset for this edition using LaTeX, in Patatino 10 point typeface. A detailed contents list (with titles for each Book and Part) and an extended index have been added to help the reader locate the parts most relevant to his studies. Page headers and footers have been carefully designed to assist the reader in finding his way around the work.

Well, here's how the KINDLE version, not necessarily the paper or other versions, reads at one point: "It was, of course, flagrantly at odds with any kind of Platonism, and so far as we can tell most philosophers tended to orientate themselves very clearly towards oneor otherofthese..." See the "oneor otherofthese" at the end? What does it mean, along with the other similar errors, some pointed out by other reviewers? That whoever is in charge of these books just couldn't care less, let the quality of the thing (on Kindle) just wander without control, not the slightest editorial review will be exercised, not the lightest spell check is allowed, presumably because somehow that gets in the way of, I guess, making money.

bear bones but, with subject matter such as this, it's all i need.
We are in 330 BC, Aristotle is sorting out the human knowledge. Let us give it a try assuming that you are also a human (sorry, machines). If we paint YOU orange, it does not change your essential condition of being a biped with a big brain also called HUMAN or ‘hUMaN’. Therefore orange is now the color of a particular human (you) and HUMAN is the uppercase version of the word which refers to your species. Notice that our little talk here never touched the definition of human. We just have two human brains playing with attributes of humans. The number 2 in this case refers US but does not exist anywhere other than within our brains. A clear definition of such abstractions is fundamental for science which is essentially creating isomorphisms between crude models and nature.
A great work which is well worth reading. In college I thought Aristotle spent too much time in correcting or discrediting other teachers; I now appreciate his detailed process of building his point of view in every angle of review.
I preface my remarks with two disclaimers. (1) I would not presume to "review" Aristotle, but I can superficially review this edition. (2) I do not know Greek.

I recommend buying this book, but not as your main text of the "Metaphysics". For your main text of the "Metaphysics", I recommend the 1924 translation by W.D. Ross, which is not in print, but you can find it used. The "Metaphysics" is famously difficult. I found the Ross translation clearer and more comprehensible than that of Tancred-Lawson (T-L). I was about one-third of the way through the T-L translation when I had to give up. But it was through the T-L bibliography that I found the Ross translation, so if that was all the T-L did for me, it would have been enough.

I also did not quite like the tone and style of this translation. I found it too informal and colloquial for my tastes. It is quite interesting in that respect, but in the end it feels stylistically wrong.

But the T-L is still well worth buying. The various introductory and textual essays are excellent and very well worth reading. T-L's alternative translation is good to have as a backup. Sometimes when it is Ross that is obscure, T-L can clarify the matter.

One warning is that you had better read the "Physics" before you read this, or it will not make any sense to you at all.

Summary At this price, the book is highly recommended as your backup translation of, and general companion to, the "Metaphysics."
I am glad to purchased this world classic. I bought an audible version. I wish I had the paper version.
I do not appreciate Lawson-Tancred's choice to only partially translate the Metaphysics into English. While I understand that it is common to use Latin words in translations like this, I found the random French on page 84 to be intolerable.
A classic book, that is absolutely brutal to read. As a philosophy major I read it for school. I read a lot of dense books and I cannot imagine anyone enjoying reading this book. It does have some classic ideas, like 'turtles all the way down,' prime mover stuff. It seems like a good translation though, with some extremely helpful introductions and explanations, so I'm giving it four stars.
